On 1 May 2025, the Lesotho Association of Teachers proudly participated in the celebration of International Workers’ Day and the formal recognition of the Federation of Lesotho Trade Unions (FELETU) in Roma. Under the theme “Healthy and Safe Workplaces”, this significant event gathered workers and union representatives to advocate for better working conditions and solidarity across sectors.

Event highlights:

  • Official Programme: The day featured a structured programme, including solidarity speeches from sectors such as textile, construction, public services, NUMSA, and the Solidarity Center. Prominent speeches were delivered by the Minister for Labour & Employment and FELETU leadership.
  • Solidarity Message: The Solidarity Center emphasized the need for intersectional approaches to workplace rights, highlighting issues faced by informal economy workers, domestic workers, and advocating for stronger maternity protections and gender equality.
  • Minister’s Keynote: The Minister for Labour highlighted recent progress, including the enactment of the Labour Act 2024 and the Occupational Safety and Health Act 2024, establishment of the Public Service Bargaining Council, and a 5% increase in the minimum wage.

Future directions:

FELETU is set to champion workers’ rights through:

  • Establishing effective bargaining structures
  • Enhancing tripartite dialogue
  • Promoting inclusive, secure, and decent work environments

The LAT remains committed to supporting FELETU’s mission and advancing workers’ rights across Lesotho.
