The success of the LAT 2021 Special Conference to resolve on the Constitution amendments and the ground-breaking Union resolution to develop a bank are a clear sign of the power of collective thinking and efforts by each individual member of the team to realise the fruits of collective effort. I am indebted to the visionary leadership of the Lesotho Association of Teachers both at the national level and Branch level without whose strategic, visionary and resilience the dream of venturing into the business sphere to improve the economic status of teachers in Lesotho would not have been born.
It would be remiss of me not to express my gratitude to the extraordinary group of committed LAT staff members whose capacity to operate effectively under pressure has been crucial to the success of the event. Moreover, without the professional and constructive inputs and attitudes of the LAT members that attended the Conference, our formers office bears and veterans, the event would not have been a success. I therefore owe my thanks to all members of LAT present and not attending for making the Conference a resounding success.
Through the COVID 19 adverse effects on our sadly defenceless country LAT has however ceased the opportunity that the pandemic has presented; reflection and adaption of new ways of thinking and working in order to find solutions to the myriad challenges that existed before and during COVID 19 including post COVID 19. The leadership of LAT guided 2020-2024 Strategic Plan made a bold and strategic decision to reinforce and empower the Union Secretariat for implementation of the new thinking reduced to writing in the form of a Strategic Plan. While not yet fully armed with necessary skills set in other areas such as projects department, however, the decisions are gradually bearing fruits.
Ahead lies a mammoth task; to translate the gigantic Microfinance and the first ever teachers’ Bank resolutions by the Union membership into reality and the enjoyment of the inherent benefits therein. The leadership of LAT through its Secretariat has a huge task to ensure the appointment of the right skills set and committed individuals not only to steer the ship but also and most importantly ensure the implementation of the foregoing Conference Resolutions. It is advisable that the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees comprise of men and women principled in principles of good corporate governance and best practices to protect the Company from the inherent politics of LAT as a Union. For the Company and the Bank to be successful, it is critical that it remains independent of the LAT as a Union but a corporate entity governed by corporate statutes and practices.
Moreover, there is need to have focused attention on staff learning and growth, establishing clear pathways for competency-based career development that aims to empower staff while also strengthening the Union. With empowered staff, I have no iota of doubt that the Union’s aspirations to expand its reach and impact on the lives of teachers and Basotho in general are guaranteed.
